Famous Shay Locomotive

Way back when - in 1873 - a practical machinist named Ephriam Shay, working in the Crippen Machine Shop in Cadillac, developed and proved out a completely new system of delivering power to the drive wheels of a locomotive. The Shay could navigate much sharper curves and climb much steeper grades than the standard locomotive. Pen sketch by Fred H. Lamb

CROSS-COUNTRY SKIING - Trails located at Cadillac Pathway, Pere Marquette State Forest, Boon R. (34 Mile Road) 3-1/2 miles east of Cadillac; MCGUIRES RESORT CENTER, 7880 Mackinaw Trail, pH 775-9947.

MACKENZIE CROSS COUNTRY SKI TRAILS. Located about 12 miles west of Cadillac, adjacent to Caberfae Ski Area.

DOWNHILL SKIING - Caberfae Ski Resort, Route 4, 2-1/2 Miles off M-55 West on Caberfae Road located 12 Miles west of Cadillac. pH 862-3301, 24 runs, 11 lifts, 470' vertical drop. highest lift-served peak in Michigan. Complete equipment rental.

FAIR - NORTHERN DISTRICT FAIR, Wexford County Fairgrounds, US-131 north city limits, third week in August. Open and 4-H classes. Midway. Ph.775-3389 for information.

FISH HATCHERY - Harrietta, Michigan. See many of Michigan's famous game fish hatched and reared. 6801 West 30 Road. pH 389-2211 or 389-2551.

FISHING - Perch, walleye and bass in Lakes Cadillac, Mitchell and others. Rainbow trout in Pine, Manistee and other rivers. Ice fishing on Lakes Cadillac and Mitchell. JOHNNY'S WILD GAME AND FISH PARK. Rainbow trout fishing by the inch, 46 1/2 Road, turn west off M-115 on first road south of M-55 intersection and follow signs, pH 775-3700.

GO-KARTS - Challenging blacktop track. ADVENTURE ISLAND, M-115 just north of the State Park.

ICE SKATING - Indoor, artificial ice rink, Wexford County Fairgrounds, US-131 at north of city limits, Ph.775-0621. Zamboni grooming.

INDIAN TRAILS - Old original trail used by Indian tribes. Withmarkers. Starts at Hiawatha Park, northeast shore of Lake Mitchell, northwestward to Buckley through Wexford County.

JOGGING - Wexford Civic Arena is open to joggers and walkers through the winter. Locker rooms available. On Fairgrounds, US-131 at north city limits. pH 775-0621.

LIBRARY - Cadillac-Wexford Public Library, 411 Lake Street. 80,000 volumes. Schedule: Sept. through May M-T-W-Th 8:30-8:30; F-8:30-5:30; Sat. 8:30-5:30 June thru Aug., M&W 8:30-8:30; T-Th-F 8:30-5:30; Sat. 8:30-12:30. Check for story hour and film showings. 775-6541.

MINIATURE GOLF - ADVENTURE ISLAND - next to Mitchell State Park.

MOTORCYCLE TRAILS - Cross state, extends north to south near westend of Wexford County.

MUSEUM - Restored Carnegie Library, Wexford County Historical Society. Summer hours, Memorial Day to Labor Day: Tues-Fri 2-5p.m., Sat 12-4 p.m. Labor Day thru Dec. and April-May, Sat 12-4 p.m. Admission by donation.

MUSHROOMS - Mushrooms galore in May throughout Manistee National Forest. Festival in MESICK, second week in May, prizes for biggest morel, parade on Saturday.

NATIONAL MUSIC CAMP (SUMMER) INTERLOCHEN ARTS ACADEMY (WINTER) - Interlochen, MI. Guest accommodations available for visitors who wish to attend concerts, observe rehearsals and enjoy campus activity. pH 231-276-9221.

NATURE TRAILS - Kenwood Heritage Park, North Blvd., 100-year old timber, swimming, boat ramp and launch, picnicking.

OLGA LAKE RECREATION - West of Cadillac. Federal Forest

SENIOR CITIZEN CENTER - 115 South Street, pH 779-9420. Year-round activities for senior citizens. Sack lunches, dances, classes, card games, Golden Wedding Ball in May.

SHAY LOCOMOTIVE - Development of Shay Locomotive (used in logging) in the late 1870's in Cadillac meant trains could navigate sharper curves and climb steeper grades than before. An early Shay is on display in City Park. Inventor was Ephriam Shay.

SNOWMOBILE TRAILS - Cadillac West and Caberfae Way snowmobile trails. Hundreds of miles of marked and groomed trails throughout the Manistee National Forest and county. Grooming done many times per week as needed. Visit the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce for Snowmobile Trails Map.
